Queen’s University Belfast Seeks Research Fellow for Advanced Sonar Project

Queen’s University Belfast, a renowned institution in the field of Electronics, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EEECS), is currently on the lookout for an exceptional Research Fellow. The chosen candidate will play a crucial role in the research and engineering team that is working on developing next-generation sonar systems for high-speed vessel collision avoidance. This project is a part of the UKRI Strength in Places Fund and is being executed in close association with Artemis Technologies Ltd., a global leader in maritime transportation R&D.

The successful candidate will be working hand-in-hand with the Centre for Wireless Innovation (CWI) engineering team, which boasts expertise in areas such as analogue and digital electronics, sonar technology, control systems, and composite engineering. The candidate will also have the chance to collaborate with the Artemis Technologies team, which specializes in maritime engineering.

The role of Research Fellow is a critical one. The selected individual will have responsibilities that include independent and collaborative research, planning activities, and regular interactions with the research and engineering team.

The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of 2:1 Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Acoustics or a related discipline. The candidate should have obtained or be about to obtain a PhD. Alternatively, they could have equivalent industrial engineering experience. The candidate should have recent research experience in the area of sonar technology, underwater acoustics and/or embedded circuits and systems.

A proven track record of using theoretical and experimental models to conduct analyses, critically evaluate, and interpret experimental data relevant to the research project is a must. The candidate should also demonstrate evidence of effective teamwork in the development and promotion of the research theme.

This is not an exhaustive list of requirements. For further information about the role including the essential and desirable criteria, candidates are encouraged to refer to the Candidate Information link.

The post is fixed term for 15 months or until 31/12/2024, whichever is sooner. Fixed-term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
