In an exciting development for the world of applied learning, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is seeking a research engineer or fellow to join an innovative industrial research project. The project’s focus is on the development of a smart electronic location and installation system for plunge-in kingpost columns, which are critical components in top-down construction projects. The project aims to revolutionize construction technology by introducing a modern design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) approach. The smart device being developed will feature an efficient positioning and verticality control system, potentially deploying micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology or other alternatives. The goal is to automate the construction process, making it more efficient and less labor-intensive.
The controls for this pioneering device will be based on PCs or tablets, ensuring easy on-site implementation. In addition to the smart device, the project also entails the development of kingposts using high-performance steel (HPS) sections. This innovation aims to reduce structural weight and further enhance productivity.
The selected candidate will have a leading role in managing the research project alongside the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and other research team members. They will be responsible for developing a locating device to partially automate the kingpost installation process using MEMS technology or other alternatives. They will also develop the interface between the locating device and the automated installation system.
In addition to these responsibilities, the successful candidate will carry out risk assessments and ensure compliance with Work, Safety, and Health Regulations. They may also assist in conducting tests and simulations to develop a safe and efficient specification for factory and site welding of high-strength steel sections.
The ideal candidate for this role should have relevant knowledge and experience in electronic circuit design and embedded system design. Experience in microcontroller programming using Assembly language or C is highly desirable. A basic understanding of sensor and actuator technologies, including GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer, hall sensors, servo motors, etc., is also essential.
Candidates should possess a degree (preferably Master’s or PhD) in mechanical engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, or related domains. Knowledge of app development and robotic/cyber-physical systems would be advantageous. The candidate should demonstrate strong initiative and ownership of work.
The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to conduct an electronic circuit- and embedded system-based project, including requirements analysis, conceptual design, implementation, testing, and verification. They will also support other related laboratory tasks as needed and be willing to learn new skills required for the project.
