In a recent report released by the ESD Alliance (a SEMI Technology Community), it was revealed that the Electronic System Design (ESD) industry saw a 12% increase in revenue in one year. This surge, from $3,527.7 million in Q1 2022 to $3,951.1 million in Q1 2023, came as a welcome surprise to industry insiders. The four-quarter moving average also showed a promising hike of 12.7%.
The report provides an optimistic outlook for the ESD industry, with the electronic design automation (EDA) sector leading the charge. Walden C. Rhines, the Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data report, confirmed that all product categories and geographic regions experienced significant growth. “From Computer Aided Engineering to IC Physical Design and Verification, as well as Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module, and Services – all reported double-digit increases,” Rhines said.
The ESD industry also showed impressive performance in terms of employment, with the number of global employees reaching 57,696 in Q1 2023 – a 12.9% increase from 51,093 in Q1 2022 and a 4.5% rise from Q4 2022.
The report also broke down the revenue data by category and geographic region. Integrated Circuit (IC) Physical Design and Verification revenue saw a significant increase of 24.6% to $675.8 million, while Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB and MCM) revenue grew by 25.6% to $368.4 million.
Geographically, the Americas led the way as the largest reporting region by revenue, contributing $1,698.2 million to the global ESD industry in Q1 2023 – a 12.7% increase from the previous year. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) followed suit with a 21.6% increase to $530.1 million. Asia Pacific (APAC) also showed impressive growth with a 9.6% increase to $1,449.9 million.
